Building the Bridge of the Air
~~~
How shall we build the bridge of air?
Invisible from here-and-now,
In stories webbed with soul and mind,
(Attributes we’ve left behind)
In pictures (though we wonder how),
We paint reality somehow,
Blending with an awestruck brush
(Colours tremble in the hush)
Of fearsome glories as we vow
Our bridge of air to so endow.
We build the bridge of now.
We build the bridge somehow.
We’ll build the bridge across the air today
By painful hew, by graven blade
With sweat and fear and a burning mind
Where dreams of airy tread are laid.
We build the bridge of now.
The bridge of air somehow.
Now we build the bridge of air!
It leads from here to yonder-there,
Through meadows steeped in mystery,
(Just that side of history)
To visions mystified and rare,
Of lands from here to over-there-
Written in this loving script
(Illuminated manuscript)
Of islands terrible, and fair,
From where we are until we’re there.
Across the bridge of air.
Across the bridge we fare.
We’ll build the bridge across the air today
Brick by stone by brick by board,
With bleeding fingers, blackened nails
By jagged knife and mirrored sword.
Across the bridge of air we go.
And fear the deeps below.
So we have built the bridge of air-
Cross the sunrise; who would deign?
In cobwebbed notions dusted clear
(Imaginations hold them dear)
To lands where kings and heroes reign
Where pomp and pettiness are slain-
Hidden true embodiment
(No one knows quite how it went)
Where lands of mountain, hill and plain
Across the bridge are whole again.
We’ve bridged across the air.
We’ve built a bridge to share.
We built the bridge of the air my friend
The misty fancy spins like glass
A’reft from minds so seldom heir
To faded footfalls of the past
Across the bridge of air
Across the bridge so fair.
